Something about me..

My name is Gloria Katerine Bernal Amézquita, I was born on February 23, 1998 in the city of Tunja, I am the third of four brothers and I am currently 9th semester civil engineering student at the Juan De Castellanos University Foundation.

I hope through my profession to implement the bioengineering in civil projects to mitigate environmental effects in the environment.

Importance of environmental awareness

The civil engineering is one of the careers with more responsibility within a society, since it has as a priority,  the task of satisfying the infrastructure needs. In the past, no emphasis was placed on  the responsibility that should be assumed in terms of the  negative impact generated with the progress of the  profession. It is now, where the sector construction has realized that the excessive use of natural  and little care is destroying the planet, being  necessary to have a commitment to minimize  environmental damage, focusing on protection, conservation and care of the natural resources that are involved in the projects of infrastructure.

This is how bioengineering has become the best alternative to achieve an integral recovery of the soil through the use of living structures.

The bioengineering aims to improve the stabilizing effect of the vegetation combining knowledge of ecology and engineering. The cause that leads looking for a solution with natural slopes, is that the organic matter of the soil plays an essential role in maintaining soil functions and preventing degradation of it. Soils constitute the largest reserve of organic carbon on the planet and are critical for climate regulation and climate change mitigation through offsetting greenhouse gas emissions

Bioengineering in slope stability

In Colombia, the use of vegetation is focused on controlling soil erosion, but not very oriented in the stability of slopes. In the Manual of slope stability of the National Institute, Several methods for erosion control are mentioned and described. through the use of vegetation. It also mentions the additional resistance provided by roots in the superficial part of the slope, but no standardized or detailed methods are observed. As it is in conventional stabilization methods and containment structures, there is evidence of a lack of information on the use of vegetation in the implementation of slope stability.

This is how the need arises to look for new alternatives and mechanisms that allow soils to adapt to their own vegetated environments, such as the method of bioengineering, this method reinforces the soil structure generating a barrier against earthworks that prevent and control erosion, environmental impact and can reach produce lower costs than everyday methods.

"The progress of bioengineering can be considered true

achievements for humanity"
